In 1968 NMMH created а scientific group which started a series of researches in the field of museum activities and military history. During its prolonged history the scientific department has published the following issues: “Works of fine art”, “Battle painting”, “Graphic art and Sculpture”, “Catalogue of photo-albums”, the albums “The April Uprising”, “The Russian-Turkish War for Liberation”, “The Relics of NMMH”, “The Bulgarian battle glory across the ages”, “Heroic past”, “The Patriotic War 1944-1945”, albums about the Polish, Czechoslovak, Hungarian and Romanian army; collections of documents “The Bulgarian Volunteer Corps” in two volumes, “Bulgarians – fighters for freedom of other nations”, “Varna 1444”, etc. Nowadays ,an exceptionally useful initiative is the publishment of short encyclopedic reference books on military subjects such as „The Command of the Bulgarian Armed Forces During the Wars of National Unification”, ”The Bulgarian Armed Forces during the First World War 1915-1918”, “The Participation of the Bulgarian Armed Forces in the First Balkan War 1912-1913”, “Military Monuments and Graves”.
