Rules for visits
- These rules set up the protocol for visitor access to the exhibitions of the National Museum of Military History (NMMH).
- NMMH’s exhibition is opened for visits Wednesday through Sunday, 10 through 18 o’clock. Ticket sale ends at 17 o’clock.
- Other cultural events held on days and in times other than the indicated above will be announced on the website of the NMMH.
- The NMMH reserves the right to close doors, or exhibition galleries, in the event of accidents, technical issues, or for other reasons, with no advance notice.
- Admission tickets (fixed design), are sold at the NMMH ticket office, according to pricelist aproved by the Ministry of Defense and sanctioned by an order of the Director. Visitors who have right of free admission, or reduced fare admission, must provide a document certifying this right.
- The last Wednesday of each month admission to the NMMH is free.
- Guided tours (of individual visitors or organized groups) include paid access to the territory of the HMMH with a guided tour and a talk. Guided tours require advance booking. Accommodating visitors or groups without advance booking is subject to availability. Maximum size of the groups within a single guided tour is 20 persons.
- Without exception, guided tours on the territory of the NMMH are museum staff-led. Tour operators or persons external to the museum are prohibited from delivering guided information accompanying a visit to the NMMH exhibition. Noncompliance with the instructions, or interference with the museum staff delivering the guided tours, is forbidden.
- All kinds of commercial activities, putting up posters or placards, distribution of other information products, except when an explicit contract has been signed to this end, are forbidden on the territory of the NMMH
- On the territory of the NMMH, indecent behavior is forbidden.
- Visitors with dirty clothing, inebriated, under the influence, or carrying arms (knives, firearms, etc.), would not be allowed on the territory of the NMMH.
- In the exhibition areas NMMH visitors are forbidden from:
a. Touching the exhibits, climbing the exhibits, breaching barriers, entering the balconies
b. Bringing in food or drink
c. Leaving kinds younger than 7 years unattended - Smoking is permitted only in the designated area – next to the service entrance
- Taking pictures on phone, or non-professional cameras, with the flash of is permitted within the exhibitions only for personal use. All other types of video/image recording must be arranged by contract
- All visitors must lock their bags in the baggage lockers provided in the designated areas (with the exception of purses) before entering the exhibitions.
- Every person who faulty causes damage to the NMMH is under obligation to rectify the inflicted damage. If that person fails to rectify the damage willingly, the NMMH is in its right to seek indemnity according to the established rules, including at court.

Guided Tours
Guided tours for individual visitors or organized groups are provided by advance booking. Booking is accepted at least 1 week before the date of visit. Visitors or groups without advance booking will be served if the Museum staff responsible for guided tours is available at the time of the visit.
Guided tours at the NMMH are provided exclusively by Museum staff. Tour operators and external individuals are prohibited to provide information during the tour of the NMMH exhibition.

Educational Programmes (in Bulgarian only)
The National Museum of Military History offers a variety of educational programmes that cover the historical period from the establishment of the Bulgarian state to the first half of the XX century. They are developed according to a three-module model that allows students to engage with the subject in an effective way.
Module 1 – lecture/theoretical part: presented in the form of an interactive presentation.
Module 2 – practical part: a museum tour that creates the educational experience in a museum environment.
Module 3 – game/creative part: participants consolidate what they have learned from the first two modules through entertaining competitive or role-playing games.
In addition to enhancing historical culture, preserving national memory and understanding of Bulgarian identity, the educational programmes provide an opportunity for a more comprehensive understanding of the school curriculum and building on the knowledge, acquired at school.

Children’s museum
For our little friends the National Museum of Military History opened MIG – misliteli, izobretateli, geroi Children’s Museum (in English – thinkers, inventors, heroes), a joint project with the New Bulgarian University, financed by the “America for Bulgaria” Foundation. The message of the new museum space designed for children from 3 to 12 years old ones is: the way to resolve conflicts is through communication. The museum labyrinth comprises of four rooms, each with its own slogan:
“I lead, I decide” recreates moments related to renowned and not so familiar commanders of the Bulgarian Army. Their example inspires children to feel themselves leaders and to reveal their skills for conflict resolution.
“I can, I do” is the space in which visitors can immerse themselves in various technical Bulgarian or foreign inventions intended for military purposes, and to learn that a significant part of these innovations and technologies today are an integral part of our daily lives.
“I think, I change” is the room where small NMMH friends will be able to see and try out soldiers’ rigs, to hear the stories of the heroes that military history remembers and knows well, and to discover for themselves what heroism is, and who their hero is.
“The museum and I” is that part of an interactive labyrinth that leads to interesting exhibits and their way to the museum exhibition.
Participants themselves determine where they want to be entertain; learn new facts and events from our military history; impersonate heroes or important wartime persons, donning uniforms and accessories – hats, shoulder straps, decorations.
In the Children’s Museum you may: play and talk aloud; touch, disassemble, and examine; read books on art, great inventors, and glorious battles; make your own museum, getting to know the vast mysterious world of museum work.
Come to the NMMH, visit the Children’s Museum, and see for yourself it is not boring here, but rather entertaining, enjoyable, and useful.
Children’s Museum Terms of Service:
- All children must be accompanied by a parent or a teacher.
- The maximum capacity of each room is 8 children.
- The safety of the children is responsibility of their companions.
Military training
Military education is designed for 9th and 10th grade pupils. It ensures acquisition of knowledge regarding citizens duties to country’s defense, survival measures in the event of an armed conflict crisis, and the missions and tasks of the armed forces.
The military education bestows the values and attitudes of patriotism, dignity, duty, honour and responsibility to the country.
Topics from the mandatory high school military education curriculum:
The National Museum of Military History has at its disposal a rich specialized library, comprising monographs, researches, bibliographies, periodical editions and albums, which are dedicated to heroic moments of our history.
In the Main fund of the museum is completed a literature about the military operations of the Bulgarian Army and the personalities which represent a momentum for them. There is a valuable referential literature about the participants in the military operations, the personnel, the awards and other materials, helping the grateful heirs to study their lineal history.
The Russian fund of the library consists of books, published between 1850 and 1970 in Peterburg and Moscow. The books comprise an information about the Russian campaigns on the Balkan Peninsula, the armaments of the Russian army, the Russian- Turkish wars, the military uniforms, the orders, the Russian government of Bulgaria, the fall of Pleven, etc.
In the library is preserved also a large number of French and German literature, published round 1900-1950. The books refer to important political and military events, dedicated to the Little Entente, Bulgaria after the Armistice of London, the minority question, the Jewish problem, etc.
Periodical editions Fund consists of specialized publications like:
- “Military-historical collection” magazine from 1929 to 1995;
- “Military magazine” with “The bulletin of the museum and of the Institute of military history” etc.
The photo type edition of Constantinople journal from 1851 to 1859 calls forth interest.
